Manual microbiology

Manual microbiology encompasses all essential steps of microbiological diagnostics, from sample collection and pathogen identification to resistance testing. Even correct pre-analytics, including the selection of suitable swabs, inoculation loops, and transport media, is crucial for reliable results.

After sample collection, pathogens are cultured on suitable culture media to multiply germs and obtain them in pure culture. Subsequently, bacteria, yeasts, or fungi are differentiated using biochemical methods and special identification systems (e.g., "Bunte Reihe" (colored series)). Based on the completed identification, sensitivity to antibiotics or antifungals can be determined. For this purpose, antibiotic discs for agar diffusion are frequently used according to the currently valid EUCAST standards. In addition, various microbiological test systems enable the examination of multidrug-resistant pathogens. With the help of the inhibition test, antibiotic residues in urine are detected to easily and cost-effectively check for prior antibiotic treatment or compliance with a prescribed antibiotic.
