Catalase refers to an enzyme that converts hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into oxygen (O) and water (H2O). In microbiology, the catalase reagent is used to easily differentiate gram-positive bacteria into (catalase-positive) staphylococci and (catalase-negative) streptococci. A drop of catalase reagent is placed on a slide, and some (gram-positive) bacterial material is mixed into the drop.
Positive reaction: Immediate bubbling, foaming, gas formation = staphylococci
Negative reaction: No or delayed bubbling.

Alternatively, the drop of catalase reagent can also be applied directly to a bacterial colony on an agar plate (caution: risk of contamination). An application video can be found at www.aurosan.de under our application videos.
