Sabouraud medium is a semi-selective medium for the cultivation/qualitative detection of yeasts (e.g. Candida spp.), dermatophytes and molds.
The partial selectivity is achieved by the combination of low pH and relatively high glucose/dextrose content.
Variants (examples):
The addition of gentamycin and chloramphenicol prevents the growth of most bacterial species that are still growing. Sabouraud-GC medium is usually used in combination with other non-selective and selective growth media, such as CLED, MacConkey and Columbia-CNA with blood.
Special dermatophyte media allow the detection of very slowly growing pathogens; chromogenic additives allow for rough differentiations.
For differentiation and antifungal susceptibility testing of the most common yeasts, we recommend the Candifast system.
Fungal plates should be incubated for at least 48 hours.
