CLED Agar is a non-differentiating (i.e., non-selective) basic medium for cultivating bacteria. Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria grow equally well, making CLED agar suitable for purity control according to RiliBÄK or EUCAST guidelines. A whole CLED plate (90mm) should always be inoculated per germ (for cultivation in purity). Different instructions suggest various streaking techniques, with or without orienting colony count determination. However, the ultimate goal is to obtain a pure culture with isolated colonies to safely assess the bacteria and pick individual colonies for further differentiation (ID) or for the resistogram / antibiogram (AST). The CLED plate is then kept as a purity culture until all results are available, to confirm purity once again. The combined cultivation on CLED, MacConkey, Columbia Blood CNA, and Sabouraud G/C is also called the Beyaert system. In our courses, we offer training for manual and semi-automatic systems.
