Sabouraud-GC Medium ("small fungal plate") is a selective medium for the cultivation/qualitative detection of yeasts (e.g., Candida spp.), dermatophytes, and molds.
Partial selectivity is achieved by the combination of a low pH and a relatively high glucose/dextrose content.
The addition of gentamicin and chloramphenicol prevents the growth of most remaining bacterial species.
Sabouraud-GC Medium is typically used in combination with other non-selective and selective growth media, such as CLED, MacConkey, and Columbia-CNA with blood.
Variants (examples): Sabouraud media without antibiotic additives or with different glucose concentrations are to be preferred depending on the suspected diagnosis or pathogen group. Special dermatophyte media allow the detection of very slowly growing pathogens; chromogenic additives enable rough differentiations.
For differentiation and antifungal susceptibility testing of the most common yeasts, we recommend the Candifast System.

Fungal plates should be incubated for at least 48 hours.
