Fe-Col papers provide a simple, user-friendly, efficient and hygienic method for stool collection. For patients, they provide a quick and easy solution to what can be a frustrating and potentially problematic problem. For laboratory analysis of faeces, they prevent the risk of sample contamination resulting in fewer test errors.

Faeces are examined for a variety of reasons, most commonly to detect the presence of bacteria or parasites, fat content, faecal occult blood, which may indicate bowel cancer, and calprotectin, which can help differentiate between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Unlike most other laboratory tests, stool samples are normally collected by the patient at home. However, many people find this collection process difficult, unpleasant and unhygienic. Cling film, cardboard plates and large amounts of toilet paper are the most common methods used, but these are then difficult to dispose of and can cause blockages in the pipes.

More than 50% of patients responding to screening collect a stool sample directly from the toilet bowl. Sampling a stool sample from the toilet bowl is technically difficult, but also leads to potential measurement errors due to the loss of stool contents into the surrounding water or contamination by toilet disinfectants and toilet water additives.

To overcome these problems, the Fe-Col device was developed: a unique disposable faecal collector that is easily and safely placed on the toilet and can be completely flushed away after use.
