β-hCG (Beta-hCG) stands for Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. It is a hormone primarily produced by cells of the placenta during pregnancy.
Why is β-hCG measured?
1. Pregnancy Detection
- β-hCG is the hormone detected by pregnancy tests in urine or blood.
- In blood, it can be detected as early as a few days after embryo implantation.
2. Pregnancy Monitoring
The course of β-hCG levels can provide indications of:
- normal early pregnancy
- ectopic pregnancy
- miscarriage
- multiple pregnancy
3. Tumor Marker
In men and non-pregnant women, β-hCG may be elevated in certain tumors, e.g.:
- testicular cancer
- choriocarcinoma
- some germ cell tumors
Normal Values
| Patient Group | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Men | < 5 IU/L |
| Non-pregnant women | < 5 IU/L |
| Pregnant women | significantly elevated, depending on week of pregnancy |
What does an elevated value mean?
- Pregnancy (most common cause)
- Multiple pregnancy
- Certain tumor diseases
- Rarely, hormonal disorders
What does a low value in pregnancy mean?
Too slow an increase or a decrease in β-hCG can indicate a disturbed pregnancy. However, evaluation is always based on multiple measurements over time.
