Fe-Col papers provide a simple, user-friendly, efficient and hygienic method of stool collection. For patients, they provide a fast and easy solution to what can be a frustrating and potentially problematic issue. For laboratory analysis of faeces, they prevent the risk of sample contamination, thus reducing testing errors.
Faeces are examined for various reasons, most commonly to determine the presence of bacteria or parasites, for fat content, for faecal occult blood, which can indicate bowel cancer, and for calprotectin, which can assist in distinguishing between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Unlike most other laboratory tests, stool samples are usually collected at home by the patient. However, many people find this collection process difficult, unpleasant and unhygienic. Cling film, paper plates and large amounts of toilet paper are the most common methods used, yet these are then difficult to dispose of and can lead to blockages in pipes.
More than 50% of patients who respond to screening collect a stool sample directly from the toilet bowl. Collecting a stool sample from the toilet bowl is technically challenging, but also introduces potential measurement errors as the stool contents are lost to the surrounding water or contaminated by toilet disinfectant and toilet water additives.
To overcome these issues, the Fe-Col device was developed: a unique disposable stool collector which is simply and securely positioned on the toilet, and which can be fully flushed away after use.
