The relevant professional societies for respiratory diseases and occupational medicine have assessed the risk for practice personnel and patients and consistently come to the same recommendation: No lung function test without an effective bacteria-virus filter! This requirement applies to all spirometers – across all manufacturers and regardless of the measurement technology. At Vitalograph, this has been standard practice for many years. And with very low test costs per patient, as no other disposable items such as adapters, breathing tubes or other mouthpieces are required.

During lung function tests, your patient blows droplets and aerosols with all contained bacteria and viruses through the measuring head of your spirometer. The measuring head becomes contaminated and would theoretically have to be cleaned and disinfected after each patient. Otherwise, there is a risk of cross-contamination, meaning your next patient could become infected via the device. However, there is usually no time for this in daily practice; the spirometer is only sporadically cleaned and poses a potential risk.

With completely open measuring systems such as ultrasound or turbine measurement methods, the exhaled lung volume of the patient, including droplets, bacteria, and viruses, is distributed unfiltered in the room. In the case of infectious patients, this represents an additional risk for the practice personnel.

The bacteria-virus filter from Vitalograph offers a modern and safe solution.
