For safe spirometry

The relevant professional societies for respiratory diseases and occupational medicine have assessed the risk for practice staff and patients and all come to the same recommendation: No lung function test without an effective bacteria-virus filter! This requirement applies to all spirometers – across manufacturers and regardless of the measurement technology. At Vitalograph, this has been standard practice for many years. And with very low test costs per patient, as no other single-use items such as adapters, breathing tubes or other mouthpieces are required.

During lung function tests, your patient exhales droplets and aerosols with all bacteria and viruses contained therein through the measuring head of your spirometer. The measuring head becomes contaminated and would theoretically have to be cleaned and disinfected after each patient. Otherwise, there is a risk of cross-contamination, i.e., your next patient could become infected via the device. However, there is usually no time for this in the practice workflow; the spirometer is only cleaned sporadically and poses a potential risk. 

In completely open measuring systems such as ultrasound or turbine measurement methods, the patient's forcibly exhaled lung volume, including droplets, bacteria and viruses, is unfiltered and distributed throughout the room. For infectious patients, this is an additional risk for practice staff.

A modern and safe solution is offered by Vitalograph's bacteria-virus filter. Unlike cardboard mouthpieces, ultrasonic flow sensors and breathing tubes, it provides a mechanical barrier that filters droplets, aerosols, bacteria and viruses (including SARS-Cov-2/Covid-19) from the airflow with an efficiency of over 99.999%.
