Anti-CCP stands for anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies. These are autoantibodies directed against the body's own proteins. The blood test is primarily used to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Anti-CCP antibodies are relatively specific for this disease and can often be detected early in the disease course.
A positive result means:
- Positive Anti-CCP: strongly suggests rheumatoid arthritis.
- Higher values may be associated with a more aggressive course and a higher risk of joint damage.
- However, a positive result alone does not prove the diagnosis, as Anti-CCP can occasionally occur in other diseases. The evaluation is always carried out together with symptoms, examination, and further laboratory values (e.g., rheumatoid factor).
What does a negative finding mean?
- A negative anti-CCP test does not reliably rule out rheumatoid arthritis, especially not in early disease stages.
