In microbiology, the catalase reagent is used to easily differentiate gram-positive bacteria into (catalase-positive) staphylococci and (catalase-negative) streptococci. A drop of catalase reagent is placed on a slide, and some (gram-positive) bacterial material is mixed into the drop.\u003cbr\u003ePositive reaction: Immediate bubbling, foaming, gas formation = staphylococci\u003cbr\u003eNegative reaction: No or delayed bubbling.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cdiv\u003eAlternatively, the drop of catalase reagent can also be applied directly to a bacterial colony on an agar plate (caution: risk of contamination).
